Starscapes Talks About Pollution. Orion is one of the most recognizable constellations visible to the human eye. The familiar three stars of Orion’s belt form a straight line that makes picking out this constellation relatively easy. If you can see it, that is. Orion is one of the most ancient constellations. It is believed to have formed and been adorning our night sky for 1.5 million years. Chances are, if you were to walk out into your backyard (or sidewalk for the urban dweller) and looked up in the sky, you wouldn’t see Orion. You wouldn’t see much. A combination of light pollution and atmospheric pollution, not to mention cloud cover and fog, prevent most people from truly viewing the beautiful night starscapes sky in all its intended magnificence. And that is a shame.
The constellation Orion has inspired many legends and lore in Native American and Greek mythology. The most famous is probably the legend of Orion and Artemis. The story says that Orion, a great hunter who was half-man, half-god fell in love with Zeus’s daughter Artemis. Zeus, being King of the gods, didn’t look kindly on this half-man pursuing his daughter. Artemis’s brother Apollo sent a scorpion to kill Orion in an attempt to protect his sister from the great hunter. The scorpion, named Scorpius, killed Orion while he slept. Artemis was so broken hearted and sad over the death of her beloved Orion and she became very angry with her brother for engineering his death. Apollo agreed to put Orion’s body in the sky so she could always remember her great love.
